The newest program in the series teaches emergency personnel how to rapidly decontaminate large numbers of casualties when speed is critical to minimize further injury to victims and to prevent cross contamination. This timely program explains the reasons for mass decontamination and illustrates techniques and procedures. The program follows responders as they take steps to identify the agents involved, conduct extensive size-ups of incident scenes, set up decon areas, prepare decon solutions and apply decon water using one & two engine ladder and bridge configurations. It also portrays triage of victims and dealing with non-ambulatory victims, monitoring for radiation, and properly dealing with modesty issues and contaminated clothing.
The importance of pre-incident planning for cold weather is stressed, and there is a comprehensive discussion of hypothermia symptoms. Other topics covered include follow-up monitoring, alternative decon set-ups, controlling run-off, mass decontamination for medical facilities, and terminating the incident. Phil Currance, Deputy Commander of the Central US National Medical Response Team for WMD, one of three national response teams that can respond to terrorists incidents and render decontamination & medical care to mass casualties.
